The KOMPSat 1 (Korean Multi-purpose Satellite 1) earth observation satellite was developed jointly by KARI and TRW. The payload is consisted of three instruments:
- Electro-Optical Camera (EOC),
- Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI),
- Space Physics Sensor (SPS)
Daewoo provided the attitude and orbit control subsystem; Halla and Hanwah, the propulsion subsystem; Hyundai, electrical power system components; Korean Air and Doowon, the structural and thermal subsystem; and Samsung, the on-board computer and satellite system test equipment.
Has 3 main experiment on board, that focus on ionospheric and magnetic fields. Also carries an electro-optical camera with 7-meter resolution built by TRW. The camera will provide cartography data for developing digital elevation maps of the Korean peninsula for land use and planning purposes.

On 31 January 2008 the Korean Aerospace Research Industry (KARI) decided to formally terminate the eight-year KOMPSAT-1 mission, since controllers had lost contact with the satellite.
